Best Mattress for Your Platform Bed: How to Pick One

Choosing the perfect mattress for your platform bed is not an easy task. With so many different styles and types of mattresses on the market, it can be hard to know which one will best suit your needs. That’s where we come in!

In this blog post, we will give you all the information you need to make an informed decision about what mattress is right for you. We’ll discuss everything from sizing to materials and review some popular options that are currently available on the market today.

What is a Platform Bed?

Platform beds are beds that do not require a box spring. The mattress sits directly on the frame, giving it an extremely low profile and creating more space in your room.

Platform beds are becoming increasingly popular and can be found in many different styles and materials. They are most popularly made from wood or metal, but can also be found in a variety of other materials including plastic and fabric.

My Favorite Mattresses for Platform Beds

I’ve had the opportunity to try and test out many different mattresses on my platform bed. Some were excellent, while others fell short of my expectations.

After trying out dozens of different brands and models, I have finally come to a conclusion about which ones are the best options for platform beds.

Here’s what I liked from each model:

Best Hybrid- Luxury Bliss Mattress by Plushbeds

One of the most important things to me is that my mattress feels as natural and organic as possible. Quality sleep can be achieved with a synthetic, foam-based mattress; but I feel much more rested after sleeping on one made from 100% all-natural latex.

It’s also very important that it doesn’t make you overheat at night. I have a tendency to sleep warm, so this is something that can wake me up and keep me from getting quality rest.

I’m happy to say that the Luxury Bliss mattress does a fantastic job of keeping your body temperature regulated while you’re sleeping soundly on its plush surface. It also provides top-notch support for my back and spine.

It’s also a very comfortable mattress with a plush top layer, so I’m able to lie down on it comfortably with no aches or pains from head to toe. It provides just enough cushioning without being too soft, providing me with everything I need for a wonderful night of sound sleep.

This is hands down my favorite mattress for platform beds. The quality is unmatched and it provides everything I need, starting with the 100% natural latex construction all the way through to sleep-warming organic cotton cover that holds up against years of use. It’s very durable and comfortable; two qualities you can’t go wrong with when choosing a new mattress!

I highly recommend this mattress to anyone looking for a top-of-the-line product that doesn’t break the bank.

Best for back pain- AS2 by Amerisleep

I suffer from acute back pain and have been on a mission to find the perfect mattress that would provide me with some relief.

I am always on my back, so I need something soft enough to cushion my joints as I sleep all night long.

The Amerisleep AS series of mattresses is by far one of the best options for those who suffer from back pain.

The Amerisleep AS Series is available in five different firmness levels: soft, plush, medium-firm, firm, and extra-firm.

As a rule of thumb for platform beds, I usually recommend the medium or perhaps even the firm level because it provides enough support without sinking too much into your structure (if you’re having one built with a beam base).

The medium-firm level is my personal favorite, but you can feel free to choose whichever option best meets your needs.

I slept on the Amerisleep AS Series for nearly two months and experienced significant relief in that time. It’s unlike any other mattress I’ve ever seen or tried out, and I’ve slept on a lot of mattresses.

Best for recovery- Brooklyn Spartan Hybrid

After a long workout or yoga session, we come home and we want nothing more than to lie down and relax.

This is exactly what the Brooklyn Spartan Hybrid mattress does for you! It was designed specifically with athletes in mind. It uses Far Infrared Rays (FIR) technology, to transform your body’s heat into waves of energy.

This is supposed to help your muscles recover faster by stimulating blood flow to them, which is typically restricted while sleeping on a traditional mattress.

I only slept on the Spartan mattress for a few weeks and didn’t notice much of a difference in my recovery time. It definitely helps with pressure points and makes you feel like your floating on air.

I did like that you have a 120-night risk-free sleep trial, and decided to return it to try out other models. I would recommend it to anyone who is more active than me and might benefit from the FIR technology.

Best for stomach sleepers- Chime by Ashley Furniture

My husband is a stomach sleeper and absolutely loved sleeping on the Chime mattress by Ashley Furniture. He was really skeptical at first because he only slept on the mattress that came with our platform frame, so we figured we’d give it a try. Boy, were we happy with our purchase!

It was very comfortable and I could tell that he wasn’t tossing and turning as much because of how well the mattress supported his back and stomach.

He had told me that he felt as if he was sleeping on a cloud. I would have to agree with him because it really did feel like the mattress just molded perfectly around his body and provided great support for his back, hips, and shoulders.

The only downside of the bed is how heavy it is after you take it out of its packaging and set it up on the frame. We tried the 12-inch version which might be the reason it was so heavy, but it wasn’t too difficult to carry up the stairs for the two of us.

I would recommend this mattress to anyone who sleeps on their stomach and needs extra support while sleeping!

Best for cooling- Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress

For anyone who considers themselves a Hot Sleeper, the Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress is a good choice. Thanks to its cooling Cloud Foam and open design, this bed helps keep you cool when things get hot.

I suffer from night sweats and the Puffy Lux has been a lifesaver for me. It came with a bonus set of bamboo sheets which helped me stay cool through the night.

Puffy provides a Lifetime Warranty, which isn’t transferable, but according to their customer service rep, it covers defects in workmanship as long as you own the mattress.

Why a Platform Bed?

There are a number of reasons why you might want to consider purchasing a platform bed over one with a box spring. These include:

More space- The most common reason to get a platform bed is that you need more space. It can be difficult to fit a box spring into your bedroom if there is not enough room, and it may even require disassembling the bed frame before moving it.
If you have tight quarters or want as much free floor space as possible in your bedroom, then a platform bed with no box spring will be perfect.

A low-profile bed frame- If you are looking for a sleek, modern look in your bedroom then platform beds will be perfect. They generally sit lower to the ground than other styles of furniture, so they help create an airy open feel while still maintaining all the benefits of having a sturdy wood or metal bed underneath.

Less noise- One of the biggest complaints about box springs is that they make a lot of noise. If you are looking to stay on good terms with your partner, then one or both of you will be grateful if your bed frame doesn’t squeak and groan all night!

Storage- If you are short on space or simply want to make the most of your room, then a platform bed with drawers is an excellent choice. These can store all sorts of items including clothing and linens so they do double duty as both a storage unit and a bed frame.

How to Choose a Mattress for Your Platform Bed: Size & Thickness

When looking for a mattress that will best fit your platform bed, it is critical to take your own measurements.

Platform beds come in a wide variety of sizes and so do mattresses. You will need to take the width, length, and thickness of your bed into consideration when buying a mattress.

Width- The first thing you should do is measure the width between both sides of your platform bed frame. Make a note of it or take a picture so you don’t forget.

Length- Just like with the width of your frame, you will also need to measure how long each side is in order to buy a mattress that fits correctly. Similar to box springs, most mattresses come in twin (39×75), full (54×75), queen (60×80 or 60×84), and king size (76×80).

Thickness- Make sure to take a close look at the thickness of your bed frame. Platform beds are generally low-profile so they can accommodate thicker mattresses.
Just make sure you can get in and out of bed easily enough before purchasing a mattress with an exceptionally high loft.

Overview- Now that you have all the measurements you need, it is time to start shopping. You can choose from memory foam mattresses, latex models, or traditional spring mattresses depending on your budget and personal preference.

All of these options will fit perfectly on any platform bed frame but I will break down the pros and cons of each so you can decide which one is best for your sleep needs.

Types of Mattresses for Platform Beds

There are a number of different types of mattresses that will fit your platform bed. I will explain the difference between each type and why you might choose one over the other.

Memory foam

This type of mattress is ideal if you are looking to relieve pressure points but it doesn’t offer as much support or firmness overall compared to latex models or spring mattresses.

Pros
  • More pressure relief
  • Less noise from squeaking springs
  • Conforms to body shape better than a traditional mattress
  • Available with or without cooling layer
Cons
  • Shorter lifespan than a spring mattress or latex model
  • Not as much support for your body overall compared to other types of mattresses

Latex

If you are looking for a mattress that is very supportive and firm, then latex mattresses will be perfect. They also offer plenty of bounce so they react to your every move as you sleep. However, these tend to be more expensive than traditional spring models or memory foam beds.

Pros
  • A very supportive and firm mattress
  • High bounce for better movement while sleeping
  • Comes in a variety of thicknesses, so it is easy to find one that will fit your platform bed frame perfectly
Cons
  • More expensive than traditional spring mattresses or memory foam models. However, you are getting what you pay for.

Traditional Spring Mattresses

This is the most popular type of mattress on the market today (especially for platform beds). Most spring mattresses are built to last at least seven years and they come in an array of thicknesses. You can easily find one that will fit your bed’s frame.

Plus, spring mattresses tend to be much cheaper compared to other types since they have fewer materials in their construction.

Pros
  • Excellent value when compared to memory foam and latex models
  • Very durable, especially when kept in the right conditions (cool & dry spaces at all times)
  • Many options are available to easily fit your platform bed frame. Plus, you can find a spring mattress as thin or thick as needed for maximum comfort.
Cons
  • Can be noisy from the squeaking springs
  • Not as much pressure relief compared to a memory foam mattress or latex model. However, they are still more comfortable than traditional mattresses that sit directly on the floor.

Now that you have all the information you need about each type of mattress for platform beds, it is time to choose one and start enjoying your next night’s sleep.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are a combination of spring models with memory foam or latex. They offer the best of both worlds for those who want to have firmness but also plenty of “give” when they sleep. Plus, hybrid options will be less expensive than either spring or memory foam beds alone.

Pros
  • Firm, supportive mattress with plenty of “give” for great pressure relief
  • Less expensive than memory foam or latex models
Cons
  • A little heavier compared to traditional spring mattresses because the inside is filled with more materials. However, this might be a bonus if you are looking for extra durability and long-lasting comfort.

Bamboo

A bamboo mattress is similar to latex when it comes to its properties and firmness. The big difference between the two materials is that bamboo tends to be much softer than traditional latex mattress models. Plus, they are less likely to trigger allergies for those who have sensitive skin or respiratory problems.

Pros
  • Softest and most comfortable mattress for platform beds
  • Hypoallergenic and great if you have allergies or sensitive skin
Cons
  • Less support compared to latex models, so you will sink in further

Final Thoughts

The best mattress for platform beds is a mattress that fits the size specifications, is comfortable enough to sleep on every night, and has a price range you can afford.

With so many different styles and types of mattresses on the market today, it can be hard to choose one. After reading this blog post, you should have a better understanding of what mattress will work best for your platform bed.
