Bedding wash schedule & tracker
How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?
Short answer: sheets every week or two. Everything else on the bed moves a bit slower. Pick an item below to get a starting date, then save it so you don’t have to remember the last wash yourself. And if the care tag disagrees with me, go with the tag.

Sheets: Every Two Weeks
Add your last wash date to calculate the next one.
The American Cleaning Institute recommends washing bed sheets at least every two weeks. Wash them more often when they collect more sweat or soil.

A Practical Bedding Wash Schedule
There’s no single perfect calendar for every bed. This is where I start for regularly used adult bedding. Sweat, pets, spills and bedding that touches your skin can all shorten it, and the care label still gets the last word.
| Bedding | Starting schedule | Wash sooner when |
|---|---|---|
| Sheets | Every 1–2 weeks | You sweat heavily, sleep with pets, or see stains or dirt |
| Pillowcases | Weekly | They feel damp or show oil, drool or hair-product residue |
| Duvet cover | Every 2–3 weeks with a top sheet; weekly without one | It touches skin directly or pets sleep on top |
| Comforter or duvet insert | Every 2–4 months when protected | It has no cover or top sheet, or it is visibly dirty |
| Mattress protector | Every 1–2 months | There is a spill, accident or illness |
| Washable pillows | At least 4 times a year | The label allows washing and they need it sooner |
| Blanket or bedspread | About monthly | It is used against the skin or gets heavy daily use |
How Often Should You Wash Sheets and Pillowcases?
Every one to two weeks for sheets. The American Cleaning Institute says at least every two weeks, and more often if you sweat a lot at night. Cleveland Clinic suggests weekly as a starting point. In the calculator I split the difference: two weeks for ordinary use, one week when the bed gets harder use.
Pillowcases spend hours against your skin and hair, so I keep them on a weekly schedule. Swap them sooner if they feel damp or show oil, drool or hair-product residue.
How Often Should You Wash a Duvet Cover?
With a top sheet, a duvet cover can usually go two to three weeks. Without one, it’s doing the sheet’s job and needs washing about weekly. That difference matters more than what the package calls it.
How Often Should You Wash a Comforter or Duvet Insert?
Start with every two to four months if a cover or top sheet protects it. If it touches your skin every night, closer to monthly makes more sense. You’ll see very different numbers online, and that’s because fill, construction and daily use all vary.
Check the care label before you stuff a bulky insert into a home washer. Some need professional cleaning, and even washable ones need room to move and rinse. Make sure the filling is completely dry before it goes back on the bed.
How Often Should You Wash a Mattress Protector?
Every one to two months is a good starting point. Wash it right away after a spill or accident. Waterproof layers can be sensitive to heat, so this is a bad place to guess at the dryer setting. It’s an easy way to ruin one.
How Often Should You Wash Pillows?
If your pillows are actually washable, aim for at least four washes a year. Foam and some other specialty fills may be spot-clean only, so check the tag first. “Pillow” describes a shape, not a care instruction.
What Moves the Wash Date Earlier?
Direct skin contact, pets on the bed and heavy sweating all shorten the interval in the calculator. A spill, accident, visible dirt, a smell that won’t go away or recent illness overrides the calendar entirely. The status flips to “Wash now” instead of pretending an old due date still matters.
How I Built the Schedule
I’m Molly, and I built these intervals from published cleaning guidance, product care instructions and years of handling bedding at home. This isn’t lab testing. It’s a practical way to turn several different recommendations into a schedule you can adjust for the bed in front of you.
The tracker saves item names and dates in this browser only. There’s no account, and the saved list doesn’t go into the site’s database. It won’t follow you to another device, and it disappears if you clear your browser data.
